What was life like for lesbian, gay and queer people in the GDR? What challenges, spaces of freedom and forms of resistance shaped their everyday lives?(in German)

This event focuses on the four decades of the GDR – the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s and 1980s – and traces the chronological development of homosexuality, homophobia, emancipation and sexual culture. Through historical insights and group discussions, a vivid picture emerges of queer life caught between social constraints and growing visibility.

The talk will be given by Peter Rausch. He is a co-founder of the GDR’s first gay and lesbian emancipation group (HIB) and is regarded as one of the pioneers of the queer movement in East Germany. As a co-founder of Sonntags-Club e. V., he played a key role in shaping the organisation’s development. To this day, he remains actively involved as a contemporary witness in the reappraisal of queer history and in fostering social dialogue.

  • Following the talk, there will be time for questions, discussions and conversations. Anyone interested is warmly welcome.
