German Youth in Stalin's Camps and Prisons
The memorial centre invites you to the launch of the book by Grit and Niklas Poppe. The authors recount the stories of teenagers and young adults who, following the Nazi era, found themselves in the Soviet Occupation Zone and the early GDR, where they fell into the clutches of the Soviet secret service and were arrested or deported.
These are stories of suffering and experiences of imprisonment by those affected, who were often forced to spend years in one of the Soviets’ special camps and in the Gulag. Quite a few lost their lives there. The experiences of those wrongfully imprisoned are recounted, often from the perspective of those affected. This highlights the severity and lasting impact of the violations of human dignity and human rights.
- The discussion will be moderated by Dr Helge Heidemeyer, Director of the Berlin-Hohenschönhausen Memorial Foundation.
