Stimming is an action we use to self-regulate – to calm or stimulate ourselves and thus find a sense of balance. Dancing involves moving our bodies rhythmically, usually to music.
The neuroqueer choreographer, performer and academic Dr Aby Watson believes that the two are one and the same – and she will show why.
In an artistic way, the performance explores the creative possibilities of neurodivergent ‘intuitive pattern-making’.
Watson improvises with vocal loops, synthesiser music and rhythmic, repetitive movements for self-regulation. In doing so, she captivates the audience whilst sharing her knowledge – a tribute to ‘stimming’ as a creative practice.
