CURRENT FILMS FROM AFRICA

From 2024 to 2027, the decentralised Berlin film festival AFRIKAMERA – CONTEMPORARY CINEMA FROM AFRICA will explore different perspectives on key social and political challenges facing the African continent, both now and in the future, under the themes of BELIEVE, CHANGE, REFLECT and CREATE.

Africa is one of the regions of the world most severely affected by the consequences of climate change.

Drought, persistent aridity, the exploitation of natural resources, demographic trends and widespread poverty are exacerbating the ecological and social challenges. Issues of distributive justice, environmental protection and sustainable development are therefore becoming increasingly important.

REFLECT – Cinematic Perspectives on the Environment and Society

Under this year’s theme, REFLECT, AFRIKAMERA presents a selection of feature films, documentaries and short films that explore the environmental and social challenges facing the African continent.

The focus includes, amongst other things, the impact of colonialism on the ecological balance, the consequences of climate change and conflicts over natural resources. The films also address the exploitation of nature by ruthless mining companies and take a critical look at the so-called ‘white saviourism’ practised by international non-governmental organisations.

Other films highlight the commitment of local environmental activists and explore the mystical power of nature. In doing so, they raise fundamental questions about the relationship between humans and the environment: What significance do earth, water and roots hold – and what is lost when land is viewed solely as an economic resource?

ABOUT AFRIKAMERA – CONTEMPORARY CINEMA FROM AFRICA

The AFRIKAMERA – CONTEMPORARY CINEMA FROM AFRICA festival is an initiative of the tou-couleur e.V. association, a coalition of German and African cultural practitioners committed to fostering intercultural dialogue between Africa and Germany.

AFRIKAMERA has been taking place in Berlin since 2008, with a different thematic focus each year, and sees itself as a platform for contemporary African cinema in the capital. In order to showcase African cinema in all its diversity, AFRIKAMERA collaborates with major African film festivals from Marrakesh to Durban.

  • AFRIKAMERA – Contemporary Cinema from Africa is held under the patronage of Dr Uschi Eid.
