Looking Back to Move Forward: Perspectives for a Resilient Future

Technological upheavals, climate change, geopolitical crises and social polarisation: in an era of far-reaching global change, the future seems almost impossible to predict. Nevertheless, there is a widespread social need to shape the world of tomorrow, starting today. But what does a democratic society need in order to remain capable of taking action?

This final instalment of the ‘Let’s talk about’ discussion series also marks the end of Futurium Director Stefan Brandt’s ten-year tenure.

From January 2027, he will take up the post of Director-General at the Berlin Opera Foundation, where he will be responsible for Berlin’s opera houses and the State Ballet.

Together with high-profile guests from the worlds of academia and public life, they will look back on the diverse experiences since Futurium’s opening whilst also looking ahead to the future. The focus will be on the question of what democracy and society need in order to move forward into the future in a resilient, sustainable and constructive manner.

The discussion combines personal reflection with questions about the future of society. At the same time, it invites us to consider the conditions under which people will be able to continue shaping our shared future in an open and democratic manner.
