A special exhibition highlight at Charlottenburg Palace in Berlin from autumn 2027

Charlottenburg Palace in Berlin will be the venue for an extraordinary special exhibitionfrom autumn 2027: for the first time, the Foundation for Prussian Palaces and Gardens in Berlin-Brandenburg (SPSG) is devoting a comprehensive exhibition to the fascinating art of dessert-making in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Opulent desserts once provided the glittering finale to princely banquets. Precious ingredients, refined flavours and spectacular presentations turned them into ephemeral works of art.

‘verzuckert. The Art of the Royal Dessert’ tells the story of the highly specialised confectioners and their creations, whilst focusing on one particular raw material: sugar was the basis of sophisticated techniques and, at the same time, a precious luxury item enjoyed by the elite.

As a colonial commodity, however, it was also closely linked to global trade routes and the exploitation of enslaved people.

Historical depictions, original display pieces and porcelain illustrate the creation of a royal dessert. The highlight is three dessert tables laid out according to historical models in the palace’s magnificent banquet halls.

Whether on your own or as a group:

this exhibition combines indulgence, art and history, offering a special opportunity for a cultural trip to Berlin and a visit to Charlottenburg Palace.
