Around 1900, not only was modern art flourishing in Berlin, but so too was the theatre. Its rise to become Europe’s leading theatre city was owed above all to the experimental director and artistic director Max Reinhardt.

For his visually striking directorial style, he collaborated with modern painters and sculptors. In 1903–04, Lovis Corinth was involved in several successful productions.

The exhibition features original sketches by the artist. Photographs of the productions and the actors and actresses convey something of the atmosphere of the performances. Peter W. Marx is a Reinhardt specialist and heads the Theatre Studies Collection at the University of Cologne, from which significant items on loan for the exhibition have been sourced.
