What happens when music leaves its familiar space and bursts out into the open like a wild animal? A musical motif can resemble a wayward memory that tells of the present.

*Music from the Window* is the title of a series of texts by Yevgenia Belorusets, dedicated to her grandfather Mikhail: during the Second World War he was a soldier; later, he worked as an engineer in Soviet Ukraine whilst also being an improviser who composed music exclusively for the members of his family. He was regarded as an ‘unreliable’ citizen, a reputation that repeatedly put him at risk of persecution. He listened to banned radio stations and created melodies in which a sense of freedom could be felt.

The concert combines Yevgenia’s series of texts with the musical programme of the ‘Motion Trio’.

The multi-award-winning author Yevgenia Belorusets has been documenting Russia’s invasion of Ukraine since February 2022. In our programme, she travels back to the Soviet era – a time of control, in which the accordion created a private space for exchange.

What kinds of connections does music forge, and what does an accordion create? ‘Motion Trio’, comprising Janusz Wojtarowicz, Paweł Baranek and Marcin Głądziyn, joins her in answering this question. The trio began with street performances and, having released 14 albums, has received acclaim from both jazz and classical critics.

Admission: 16 euros / reduced 11 euros (incl. 1,00 euro booking fee)

The concert is part of the ‘Global Sound Stories – Accordion Meets Literature’ concert series.

An event organised by the Landesmusikrat Berlin e.V. (Berlin State Music Council).

Funded by the DKLB Foundation.
