wfilm nobody gegen Putin
Winner of the Oscar® and the BAFTA for Best Documentary, *A Nobody Against Putin* is one of the year’s most acclaimed international documentaries. With dry humour and great humanity, the film tells a story of courage, moral courage and the power of truth – and offers a rare insight into the Russian education system.
“Wars are not won by generals, but by teachers in schools” – Vladimir Putin, 2023.
Pavel ‘Pasha’ Talankin is a teacher and videographer at a school in Karabash, an industrial town in the Urals. With the Russian invasion of Ukraine, everyday school life changes fundamentally. From then on, political indoctrination, state propaganda, compulsory patriotic lessons and military rituals dominate school life, designed to prepare children and young people for war and obedience.
Commissioned by the school authorities to officially document these developments, Talankin uses his position to carry out a dangerous act of personal resistance: he secretly records what is actually happening in the classrooms. At considerable personal risk, he has created a testimony that is as harrowing as it is moving – a record of militarisation, moral courage and the struggle for freedom of thought.
After the screening:
Following the film, we look forward to a discussion with co-director and protagonist Pavel Talankin. Together, we’ll take a look behind the scenes and talk about the making of the film, his personal experiences and the extraordinary journey from the school in Karabash to the international cinema screen.
