Student Day at the Gemäldegalerie
- This event is open exclusively to students and trainees.
Admission is free upon presentation of appropriate proof of status.
What do portraits reveal about people? And what happens when portraits from different historical, geographical and social contexts come together? Art history students from Freie Universität Berlin and the Gemäldegalerie invite students and trainees from all disciplines to a Student Day centred on the exhibition ‘Portraits! Surprising Encounters from Botticelli to Lempicka’.
The Student Day offers the opportunity to explore the new special exhibition from different perspectives and to engage in discussion together, using the works as a starting point. Guided tours, discussion sessions and workshops will address questions that make portraits relevant to this day:
What do they reveal about identity, status, the body, gender or self-presentation? And how does our perspective change when works from different eras are brought into dialogue with one another?
Alongside a playful engagement with the artworks, there will be time to get to know one another, exchange ideas and network in a more relaxed atmosphere.
The Student Day grew out of a seminar in which the participating students engaged intensively with the exhibition last semester. Their perspectives and questions are taken up in a varied programme designed to stimulate thought and discussion.
No prior knowledge of art history is required – just a curiosity about images, people and unexpected encounters.
