Love hurts, and Berliners aren’t pancakes. These are the most important lessons you should know about communicating in the capital. We like to grumble and give people the stink eye, but you shouldn’t take offence. The Berlin dialect is a made-up language. We’re just putting on an act.

Here you’ll find out how the big city got its big mouth, why the Beatles speak with a Berlin accent in the film, and that the supposedly Berlin expression ‘Telespargel’ for the TV Tower is complete nonsense.

Lea Streisand has written a cultural history of the Berlin dialect for locals and newcomers alike – concise, clever and with a touch of gentle humour – just like her radio column “war schön jewesen” on radioeins.

Rescheduled date for 1 October.

The event will take place in the function room on the 3rd floor of the library

Free of charge! Please register, as places are limited:
