Klaus Gendries – artistic director of the Köpenick Municipal Theatre – will be honoured on the third anniversary of his death.

During his career spanning over 70 years, Gendries directed more than 150 film productions. For the past five years, he worked as artistic director and director here at the Köpenick Municipal Theatre. We are showing his final production, world premiere and opening night performance of “Der Star mit dem Stern”, directed by Bernd Wefelmeyer.
The production centres on the artistic life and untimely death of the Jewish director and actor Kurt Gerron, who was deported and gassed by the Nazis at the Auschwitz extermination camp.
The inspiration, drawn from personal conversations with him, was his statement at the end of his life regarding the staging of this play: “I owe a great deal to the Jewish people”. With this theme, on 18 November 2023, we intended to use the means at our disposal to encourage our audience to take a stand against anti-Semitism, to speak out effectively and to fulfil our duty as a theatre.
