Vitalii Shupliak is interested in those interstitial spaces where familiar orders lose their unambiguity.
His works navigate between the sacred pictorial tradition and the digital present, between individual perception and collective experience. In this context, boundaries appear less as fixed lines than as permeable spaces in which meanings shift.
At the Gothic House, this contemporary perspective encounters an architecture that itself thrives on transitions: between light and darkness, inside and outside, past and present. Historical visual worlds and spatial structures become resonant spaces for a present in which boundaries are becoming increasingly porous.
Reflective birds become both a source of protection and a barrier. Sacred eyes encounter the luminous surfaces of digital devices. Bodies float between different realities, whilst fire becomes a symbol of transformation between creation and destruction. In the process, the familiar repeatedly begins to tip into the uncanny.
What promises protection can become a boundary; what creates visibility can, at the same time, conceal something. Technology, ritual and memory overlap, turning perception itself into a threshold.
‘Thresholds’ is an exhibition about the in-between – and about the question of what becomes visible when certainties reach their limits.
Vitalii Shupliak, born in Ukraine in 1993, lives and works in Berlin. He studied fine art in Lviv, Gdańsk, Poznań and Braunschweig. His artistic practice encompasses video installation, painting and performance, and explores the intersections of reality and virtuality, as well as issues of migration, identity and borders.
