Three songs about being alone

When does loneliness end and when does being alone begin? YUNUS isn’t quite sure either. Perhaps because he isn’t very good at it himself. How could he be, when we’ve got used to being constantly available and now spend more time with our screens than with one another?

This autumn, YUNUS’s new EP ‘Three Songs About Being Alone’ is due to be released – a cycle of songs about the different states of being alone. About thoughts that go round in circles until, at some point, our projections seem more convincing than reality. About the search for one’s true self and what happens when, at some point,

realise you’ve already found yourself. And about doomscrolling, screen time and the final boss in our pockets.

Musically, YUNUS brings together world-weariness, political anger and tender love, without turning it into a preachy concept album. On the contrary: his songs are poetic and urgent, sometimes sad, sometimes absurd, and often at their funniest precisely when things have long since ceased to be funny.

Born in Istanbul, raised in the affluent suburbs of Berlin and Munich, he suddenly found himself studying the viola in Hanover amidst battle rap and poetry slams – and eventually ended up back in Berlin to make indie pop: YUNUS doesn’t like being alone, but he loves taking the long way round. He’s a trained violist, a self-taught rapper and songwriter. And he loves telling stories. Not just in songs, but also in collections of writing, viral Reels and on stage. Whether at festivals like Open Flair or the

Reeperbahn Festival, as support for Dominik Hartz or LIN, or in concert halls such as the Berlin Philharmonie and the Elbphilharmonie: live, YUNUS is completely in his element – and perhaps that’s why he isn’t particularly good at being on his own.

But detours pay off. Sometimes they lead you onto the stage. Sometimes to yourself. And sometimes simply onto the sofa, with good music and three songs for when you’re on your own.
