Housing sufficiency comes into play where there is a gap between housing needs and living space. Whilst housing needs often change over the course of a person’s life, the housing situation often remains static from middle age onwards. In light of demographic change, the question is increasingly being raised as to how people can and wish to live in the second half of their lives. The fact is that in Germany, a small number of people currently live in large spaces, whilst many people live in small spaces.

In this ‘Transformation Dialogue’, they will discuss with experts how housing needs and living space can be aligned so that everyone always has ‘enough’.

Key questions in the ‘Transformation Dialogue’ are:

  • What potential lies in the shared use of space?
  • How can unused spaces be put to use, for example through swapping?
  • What strategies can help people achieve greater housing mobility?
  • To what extent do these ideas also address changing social needs, such as those of patchwork families or multi-generational shared flats?
